Many people wonder, can too little sleep play a role in the development in younger children? Of course, the hours of sleep in many teenagers have gone down primarily in teenagers, although, this is partially due to technology. Technology plays a role because often social media attracts the attention of many kids, and have the ability to manipulate their minds. In a new age of technology more and more kids are becoming too dependent on social media, that they lack in other areas and missing out on numerous activities.
With this being said, sleep remains a problem in children and young adults around the country. Lack of sleep affects health and academic potential as well. According to a survey taken by the National Sleep Foundation in 2006, states that less than 20 percent of adolescents get the optimum 8 hours of sleep on school nights. But with phones and other devices playing a significant role in this age of society, the percent of those who gets sleep is significantly less.
After reading this article, I am not surprised by the survey results. Society has let technology take over their lives and ruin the development needed for a successful life. I feel that sleep will lead to higher grades in school because sleep helps rest neurons in the brain. Neurons stimulates the senses and help the body develop. One change that could lead to more sleep is possibility extending the school day. Although school would get out at a later time, a longer morning would allow students to get their full rest and do better in everyday life.
“Sleep is not optional. It’s a health imperative, like eating, breathing and physical activity,” (Dr. Judith A. Owens 1). Her statement is very true because lack of sleep could ruin someone's life. Lack of sleep can impair judgement, which could lead to uncontrollable outbursts and actions, mood swings and irrational decisions.
Some changes that are suggested to increase sleep was a technology curfew. Although reducing usage is a bit extreme in some cases, but will definitely show improvements.
